The race is on
Last year the Geneva-based Alinghi team and Red Bull announced their partnership as Alinghi Red Bull Racing – and that they will compete as a Challenger in the 37th America’s Cup, held in autumn 2024 in Barcelona. Founded in 1994 by Ernesto Bertarelli, Alinghi pulled off a surprise as a small Swiss team by winning the 31st and 32nd America’s Cup. The boat for the competition two years from now is still being built; the crew, however, already trains day after day in the waters off Barcelona on the 35-foot “Boat Zero” (pictured). Every last bit of experience feeds into building the Challenger “Boat One” – a multi-million-franc project backed by Swiss watchmaker Tudor as title sponsor. Tech buffs should visit tf35.org, where all the boat’s specifications can be found. Once it lifts off on its T-foils, it should hit 100 km/h.
Natural Beauty
Oceanographic magazine named Martin Broen Ocean Photographer of the Year 2021. The Argentine diver doesn’t simply use off-the-shelf gear – he builds the equipment he needs himself, in order to reveal the fantastical world of, for instance, these caves on Mexico’s Riviera Maya in all their mysterious complexity. Broen himself comes across like a weightless visitor from another planet. Down there it is normally pitch dark, and in these labyrinths the nearest exit is dozens of metres away. With his images, Martin Broen wants to show the boundless diversity of the sea – and to raise awareness of how magnificent, precious and unique a resource the ocean is.

A showcase role for Kate Winslet, who refuses to bow to the usual Hollywood rules. You get honest emotions, unvarnished truths and, once she does fall for someone, love from the bottom of the heart. That’s the kind of woman a man wants, isn’t it? The lasting antidote to self-optimised, artificial, photoshopped beauties. Life, in full.
More Than a Tree
In December 1931, the workers on the Rockefeller Center construction site in New York chipped in to buy a Christmas tree and put it up in front of the still-unfinished building – six metres tall. When the centre was inaugurated two years later, Rockefeller adopted the fledgling tradition. Ever since, a spruce has stood there year after year, having grown into the world’s most famous Christmas tree. The tree is chosen anew each year; one even came from Canada. Afterwards, the wood is donated. Visiting the tree is hopelessly romantic – whether you’re a Christmas fan or not. The mood is a dream: tens of thousands of LED lights twinkle, the ice rink sits in front of it, hot chocolate in hand and jeweller Tiffany just around the corner. You get the picture.
