I am hunted, harried, tormented – for years now. No sooner have I booted up my computer than a banner glares from the home page: an elderly gentleman with twinkling eyes proudly tells me that in 2022, thanks to generous insurers, «hearing aids cost almost nothing». A veritable «hearing-aid revolution». What a happy day.
Hearing aids. It simply never stops. How I became the favourite target of the hearing-aid makers is a mystery to me. Sure, every mouse click leaves traces in the digital world. But why me? Because I fall into the right age bracket? Or because I turned up the volume on my computer?
And yet I have heard well since childhood – even if an ENT doctor once found that I have unusually narrow ear canals, a little like a diver’s. All the same, I am apparently taken for hard of hearing. Probably because I don’t understand everything going on in the world. And that is getting steadily worse.
If there were a hearing aid with an added «understanding» function, I’d be the first to snap it up.
